What to pack for Barcelona in October: sun and storms

The story

Barcelona in October still feels like summer at midday. You start early in the Gothic Quarter, where the streets are so narrow the sun barely reaches the stones, and a long-sleeved shirt feels right at 16 °C. Under the carved bridge of Carrer del Bisbe, a guide stops a group for photos, and you slip past them.

Your ticket for the Sagrada Família is for eleven. At the door, a guard checks clothes: shoulders covered, nothing that looks like beachwear. You’re fine, in a T-shirt and trousers. Inside, the light through the stained glass turns the columns orange and blue.

After lunch at two, the way Barcelona does it, you walk down to the Barceloneta. It’s 22 °C, and the sea, at about 21 °C, is warmer than the air will be tonight. You swim, dry off on your towel, and keep your phone in your bag, not on the sand.

At five, the sky over the hills turns dark grey. The storm, when it comes, is heavy: rain bounces off the pavement, and the steep streets toward Park Güell become streams for half an hour. Then it’s over, and the air smells of wet stone.

Dinner starts at nine thirty, outside, at 17 °C, with a light sweater. The metro back is busy, and you keep your bag zipped and in front of you.

Barcelona in October is warm by day and mild at night, with a sea still good for a swim and the year’s heaviest rain arriving in short, strong storms. Pack light layers, a rain jacket that folds small, and swimwear.

Pack for late summer by day, a cool evening, and one or two downpours.

Clothes

T-shirts and light shirts for afternoons around 22 °C.
A light sweater or overshirt for the evenings and air-conditioned museums.
A packable rain jacket: the storms are short but heavy.
Trousers or a skirt below the knee, and a top that covers the shoulders, for churches.
Swimwear and a quick-drying towel, if you’ll swim.

Shoes

Walking shoes with grip: marble and stone streets get slippery in the rain.
Sandals for the beach and warm evenings.

For the day

A small bag that zips, worn in front on La Rambla, in the metro and at the beach.
Sunglasses and sunscreen: the October sun is still strong.
A refillable water bottle.

Documents, money and tech

Passport, or a national ID card if you’re an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen.
Your timed tickets for the Sagrada Família and Park Güell, on your phone.
A plug adapter if you come from outside continental Europe: sockets are types C and F, at 230 V.
A power bank for long days out.

Good to know

Weather: October runs from about 15 to 23 °C (59 to 73 °F). It’s one of Barcelona’s wettest months, but the rain tends to come in short, heavy storms between sunny days. The sea stays around 21 °C (70 °F).
Meal times: lunch is from about 2 to 4 pm, and dinner rarely starts before 9 pm.
Sights: the Sagrada Família and Park Güell sell timed tickets that often sell out: book ahead. Churches ask for covered shoulders and no beachwear.
Safety: pickpockets are common on La Rambla, in the metro and on the beach. Keep bags closed and phones off café tables.

Money: euro (EUR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
